Almost every enquiry that reaches our shop floor in Morbi mentions a form of separation, and almost as often the number quoted has been copied from an older tender document rather than chosen for the plant it will serve. Getting the form right matters, because it decides what a maintenance technician can safely reach while the rest of the assembly stays energised.
What separation actually means
Separation refers to the internal barriers between busbars, functional units and terminals inside a low-voltage assembly. A higher form does not make a panel more reliable in normal running. It changes what happens during maintenance and during a fault: whether an arc stays inside one compartment, and whether an outgoing feeder can be worked on while the incomer remains live.
A practical reading of the forms
- Form 1 has no internal separation at all. Everything shares one space, which is acceptable only where the board is isolated completely before any work.
- Form 2 separates the busbars from the functional units. Common on distribution boards where outgoing work is planned during shutdowns.
- Form 3 separates busbars from units and units from each other, but terminals may still share space. A reasonable middle ground for many motor control centres.
- Form 4 separates busbars, units and the terminals of each unit. Sub-divisions 4a and 4b differ in whether terminals sit in the same compartment as their unit or in a fully separate one.
How we advise buyers
The question we ask first is not which form, but how the plant runs. If the line cannot be stopped for a feeder change, the extra compartments of Form 4b earn their cost quickly. If the board feeds a batch process that already shuts down weekly, Form 3b often gives the same practical safety for a smaller footprint and a lower bill of materials.
Higher forms also consume space and copper. A Form 4b assembly for the same load list can be noticeably longer than a Form 3a version, which matters when the electrical room was sized years ago for something smaller. We would rather flag that during drawing approval than after fabrication.
What we supply against it
Whichever form is agreed, the general arrangement drawing shows the barrier scheme before we cut sheet metal, and the routine test report that ships with the panel records what was verified.
